Posted up on another forum. Threw together a little script that will check for your boot.ini file, and if it's missing, it will check the only place in the windows directory we can seem to find a backup copy (about 70% so far have it). (Windows\pss dir).
Posted it up on a spare domain I had: www.gamingassist.com.
Gotten about 40 thank you emails, so its working for most ppl.

If your popping a dual boot setup, you should know better. You always keep backups and boot disks for the custom setups. Sorry you got screwed, but you should always CYA. Lesson's learn by heartache I guess. Hopefully bootcfg can win that battle for you.

To request "free" stuff from CCP for this issue is absolutely idiotic. Perhaps you should go play World of Warcraft, where they charge... not only the subscription fee, but $50 for the game PLUS another $45 for a damn expansion. Yeah, this situation sucks, but obviously it was an accident. The flip side of all this is for them to delay expansions, hire 15 more programmers for testing, and jack up fees to compensate. To not only prove that they are a better company for providing free expansions, they ALSO spent the additional time to ensure people did not need to run out and by a SM3 compliant video card. Who else does that?
For people in this situation with their hands out, I'd much rather spit in their hands than give them anything else.

lazy coding. they didnt use the full path when they deleted eve's boot.ini, instead just deleted boot.ini from the current directory, which defaulted to the root, instead of the eve folder somehow.
if they just had it delete c:\games\eve\boot.ini or whatever it wouldnt have happened.
also if ccp had any competent QA testers they would have caught this bug days ago. SHAME ON THE CCP QA DEPARTMENT!
Shame on you Spork... you know what they'd get if it deleted "C:\games\Eve\boot.ini"? A bunch of boot.ini files that don't get removed... because you are forgetting 1 major part. NOT EVERYONE INSTALLS TO THE SAME LOCATION! <CORPMATE SLAPS SPORK> Bad Spork, Bad.

Originally by: Boceta Have a simple question: How can I verify that my BOOT.INI is still there and ok? I open My computer and select C:\ (with show hidden files selected) and see no Boot.ini. Yet when I oipen msconfig in 'run' or try to copy a backup to C:\ it ask if I want to replace existing one created today? MSCONFIG also has a Boot.ini tab and all looks fine.
Thanks.
If you read about 6 pages previous, you'd see that I made a small open source app that checks if your boot.ini is there, and if not, will attempt to restore it from a known backup.

Edited by: proclaimed HERETIC on 06/12/2007 10:40:10 Wow... all these complaining people, yet they don't bother to read the thread.
Most complaints have been exhausted, damn near to the same wording.
While we are at the repetitive nature of things, Oh... BTW guys... the new patch had a problem.

I really wonder how long it will take everyone to figure out they are posting the same boot.ini file regardless of XP type.
Only difference is the prompt label between all of them.... geeeeeezzzzzzzzz.

Originally by: Lew Djarum I'm just completely dumbfounded. How CCP doesn't stumble across the WHOOPSIE our patch erases important system files on the most abundant operating system in the world, when people upgrade the most logical way. Perhaps instead of wasting resources making videos touting their ability to make a station out of 8 billion polygons, they could have actually tested the upgrade on the operating system that a large percentage of their paying customers use.
Congratulations to your quality control team. They handled this with all the competence of an Aboriginal tribe constructing a Ferris wheel out of cheese.
Thank you Captain Obvious for that tid bit of knowledge that was never shared before. Your being part of the problem, not the solution.
Is anyone still down?

Originally by: Krima Sumyungi Nice first impression for those who waited for Trinity to hit before giving the game a try. I'm sure alot of first time trial accounts have decided not to subscribe because of this fiasco, especially if their comps were affected.
GG CCP.
They can try their hands at World of Warcraft, and we'll be seeing them back next Tuesday.
